what is Down syndrome?

Down syndrome (also know as Trisomy 21) is a genetic condition that occurs in about one of 800-1000 live births. It is the most frquently ocurring chromosomal abnormality and affects all ages, races and economic levels. The disorder occurs as a result of extra genetic material. In most people, the genes are contained on 23 pairs of chromosomes, for a total of 46 chromosomes. Most people with Down syndrome have an extra copy of the
No. 21 chromosome, for a total of 47 chromosomes. Children born with Down syndrome are at a higher risk for congenital heart defects, respiratory problems, obstructed digestive systems and susceptibility to infection. Most will have some mental retardation, usually in the mild to moderate range. Today, with early intervention, advanced medical care, better education and greater social acceptance, children with Down syndrome live full,
productive lives and have a life expectancy
of 55 years and beyond.
